It has been a couple years now since the first Eee PCs were released, and the netbook-style laptops are certainly leaving their mark. They have become the go-to product for people who seem to be constantly on the move, and require a lightweight laptop that they can use to run office applications, email and internet, which wont break the bank or take up large amounts of space. The T91 builds on the successful formula by adding some neat new functionality. Firstly, there’s the new swivel touchscreen, which is perfect both out in the field when performing audits, as well as back in the office when making presentations. The screen is a resistive touchscreen however, so it may not be as smooth as the newer capacitive touchscreens out on the market today (however, with the release of Windows 7, Asus are reportedly looking to release T91s in the future with capacitive touchscreens to make use of the Windows 7 multitouch functionality). It does come with a retractable stylus to remedy this though. It also supports the new 802.11n Wifi standard, which is much faster than its predecessors. The T91 also comes with a built in camera and microphone, if ever required to attach any evidence during an audit or inspection. While Eee PCs are not known for their large storage capacity, the T91 has a siezable 16GB solid state drive, as well as a 16GB SD Card and another 20 GB of Eee storage on the actual machine itself, so it should provide enough space for most people who use it for their inspection and office needs. The T91 weighs just under 1kg, so it’s a featherweight compared to most laptops, however its price of around US$499 puts it around the mid-high cost range of most Eee PCs.
The latest ruggedised PDA from Airo is the a25is. The real difference that sets this PDA apart from others that claim to be rugged, is the fact that it has received both the North American UL913 and European ATEX certifications for intrinsic safety. It has passed Military Specifications (MIL-SPEC 810-F) and is IP67 certified, for water immersion and shock proofing. The a25is boasts a slew of other global specifications, but even without these, it’s easy to see that this PDA is certainly geared towards users in high-risk and hazardous working environments (particularly users who work in explosive environments). It can take most things that you can throw at it (and most things that you can throw it at!), all the while remaining a smartphone, with an easy to use interface. It runs Windows Mobile 6 under the hood, and the large icons make the phone suited for use while wearing protective gloves. It has all the standard connection functionality, including WiFi, and has an accurate GPS too. If you’re looking for a PDA/phone that can take the heat (and cold) of extreme environments, this should certainly warrant more than a look.
